OB Autumn Course
Dear Colleagues and Friends
The history of modern hip prosthesis surgery started in the 60' with the
introduction of the all cemented procedure by Sir John Charnley.
Since then, total hip arthroplasty (THA) has developed dramatically and has
become one of the most successful techniques in orthopaedic surgery.
Numerous designs - acetabular as well as femoral components – have been introduced
by the industry with varying success. Metal-on-metal resurfacing of the hip has been developed
in the 90s as an alternative bone-conserving technique for young and active
patients.
Alternative bearing surfaces and highly cross-linked
polyethylenes have been developed in an attempt to reduce the incidence of
wear-inducted periprosthetic osteolysis. These alternative bearing surfaces currently
include ceramic-on-polyethylene, ceramic-on-ceramic,metal-on-metal and metal-on
ceramic.
Taking all these techniques into account, it is not always obvious to
know which technique would be most beneficial for a particular patient.
The goal of this Autumn Meeting is to try to give a survey of the
procedures, designs and bearings currently used in hip arthroplasty in order to
make a well-founded choice of technique.
As the industry will be present with a nice exhibition, you will be
offered the opportunity of seeing the prostheses that are presently available
on the market.
We hope to meet you all in the fantastic Elzenveld congress venue. This
former hospital will be the ideal setting for this Autumn Meeting.
Sincerely yours
Rudy Nuyts
